Voters in the Ritenour School District showed their support at the polls on June 2, 2020 for needed facility improvements at all K-12 Ritenour schools by passing Proposition S, a $19.5 million zero tax rate change bond issue.

According to unofficial election results, Prop S received 80.45% “Yes” votes. The proposal needed a 4/7 majority (57.14 percent) for passage.

The election faced significant challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, which included the postponement of the original election date of April 7 to June 2, a decrease of polling places in the district from 22 to 7, and the uncertainty with the spread of the virus and recent civil unrest.

Voter turnout at the polls was impacted by the pandemic, with lower than usual in-person voting for a spring municipal election, according to the St. Louis County Board of Elections. However, the county election board said the number of absentee ballots cast for this municipal election was at a record high.

Ritenour Superintendent Dr. Chris Kilbride is grateful for the community’s continued support in keeping its schools a priority, even amidst the challenges that the pandemic and civil unrest have created this spring.

“The biggest winners are our students, families and community,” said Superintendent Dr. Chris Kilbride. “We are excited that funds from Prop S will allow us to make needed repairs and improvements to our school buildings as we continue to meet the learning needs of our students today and in the future.”

Jerry Nolen, retired activities director at Ritenour High School who led the Citizens for Ritenour’s Future committee during the unusual election campaign, said his Husky pride has reached new heights.

“I’ve lived in this community for more than 60 years and witnessed as an alum, parent and staff member how we have come together during difficult times, said Nolen, who worked in the district for 30 years. “The support we witnessed for Prop S despite the obstacles of the pandemic and civil unrest, shows that our community values our schools and is committed to investing in its future.”

Funds from Prop S, which will not increase the debt service tax rate, will be used to make safety, security and other facility upgrades to Ritenour’s six elementary schools, two middle schools and Ritenour High School. Click here to read more about the specific projects planned with the $19.5 million bond issue funds...
