Moreover, it is essential to approach AI use with careful consideration and adherence to the district’s mission, vision, values, and policies lawfully and ethically.

AI Use and Prohibitions

District students and employees must use AI responsibly and in accordance with this AI Use Plan. AI users are responsible for any harm caused by their AI use. District instructional staff will oversee student AI use in the classroom to monitor whether the use is safe, educational, and effective. The AI coordinator may intervene in or prohibit additional AI use that, in the AI coordinator's determination, poses an unacceptable risk to the privacy or safety of any person.

District students and employees are strictly prohibited from engaging in the following uses of AI:

Using AI in a way that violates any district policy or applicable law;
Inputting into any AI any confidential or critical data, as defined in policy EHBD, or any other confidential information unless the AI coordinator has approved the use as safe, appropriate, and legal;
Using AI to violate the instructions or requirements of any assignment;
Representing AI-generated content as their own work;
Using AI to create or disseminate false information on matters or events of public importance;
Using AI to create any altered image or voice of any person without obtaining that person's permission;
Using AI to generate any material that is obscene or harmful to minors;
Using AI to harass, embarrass, defame, misinform, or otherwise harm any person;
Using AI to cause disruption to district operations, including instruction;
Using an AI product that is not permitted by the AI Use Plan; or
Using AI to negatively affect the district or in a way that causes harm.

NEVER INPUT CONFIDENTIAL, SENSITIVE, OR PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION (PII) IN AN OPEN AI SYSTEM, SUCH AS CHATGPT, GEMINI, COPILOT.

Resources for Teachers and Staff

Enhancement, not Replacement

Ritenour believes that technology, including AI, should be used to augment classroom instruction rather than replace human interaction and instruction. While these tools can provide valuable support, they should never substitute the critical role of teachers in fostering meaningful student engagement and facilitating personalized learning experiences.

The use of AI in the classroom should be aligned to the district’s mission, vision, and values. Teachers are encouraged to ensure that any implementation of these technologies is consistent with the district’s curriculum and educational goals. Using AI with students can be an innovative and engaging way to enhance their learning experience. Student use of AI must follow the district’s AI policies and AI Use Plan. In addition, it's important for parents to set appropriate guidelines and expectations to ensure that the technology is used in a responsible and productive manner.

In addition to the district’s AI policies and AI Use Plan, here are some guidelines and expectations for parents using AI with their students:

Supervision and Monitoring

Always supervise your student's use of AI tools, especially if they are younger.

Regularly review the generated content to ensure accuracy and appropriateness.

Set Clear Goals

Define specific instructional goals for using AI.

Clarify how AI will complement and support your student's learning, rather than replace traditional learning methods.

Balance with Other Learning Activities

AI should be a supplementary tool, not a replacement for critical thinking, research, and creative skills.

Encourage your student to engage in hands-on learning experiences, discussions, and critical analysis alongside AI use.

Privacy and Data Security

Teach your student about the importance of not sharing personal or sensitive information while using AI tools.

Critical Thinking and Review

Teach your student to critically evaluate the quality and accuracy of AI-generated content.

Respect Copyright and Plagiarism
