Top 10 Ritenour Rules of Bus Safety

  1. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your bus stop at least 5 minutes before the published bus stop time. Don’t rush. Please wait until 10 minutes after the stop time to call Transportation about a missed stop.
  2. Stay off the street while waiting for the bus.
  3. Stay 10 giant steps away from the bus when the bus arrives in the morning and before it leaves in the afternoon.
  4. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before you move toward it to board, or before you get out of your seat to get off.
  5. Hold the handrails when going up or down the stairwell of the school bus.
  6. Find a seat as soon as you get on the bus, and stay in it until you reach your destination.
  7. Keep your hands, feet and other objects to yourself, and inside the bus. Never throw anything out of the bus.
  8. Wait to cross the street until the driver says it’s “Ok.” Only cross in front of the bus. Do not cross more than two lanes of traffic. If your stop requires you to cross more than two lanes of traffic, please call the transportation department.
  9. If you drop something near the bus, always ask the bus driver or another adult for help to retrieve the item. NEVER pick up anything you drop near the bus, and stay away from the bus wheels at all times. The bus driver may not see you.
  10. Be courteous and respectful to the bus driver. Wait to speak to the bus driver when the bus is stopped, not while the bus is moving. Always listen to directions.
