Welcome to the 2026-2027 School Year

Dear Marvin Families,

Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year at Marvin Elementary! We hope your summer has been filled with rest, fun and special moments with family and friends. We are excited to welcome back our returning Marvin Stars and extend a special welcome to our newest Stars in kindergarten and all families joining the Marvin community for the first time.

Theme: Camp Marvin Star: On the Trail to Success

This year, our theme is Camp Marvin Star: On the Trail to Success. Every Star has a unique path, and along the way, students will make new discoveries, overcome challenges, develop new skills, and celebrate milestones of growth. While each student’s path may look different, our expectations remain high and we believe every Marvin Star can achieve success.

A successful camp is built on a strong community, and Marvin is no different. Although each of us may travel a different path, no one reaches success alone. Each member of our Marvin community has a role in creating a school where everyone feels safe, included, respected and ready to learn.

The journey is strongest when families, teachers and school staff work together. We value open communication and strong partnerships with families throughout the year. We also encourage families to become active members of our Marvin community by joining our monthly Very Important Parents (VIPs) meetings, where families can connect, learn about school initiatives, and help shape the experiences we create for our Marvin Stars.

Academic Focus

Our competency-based approach to learning allows us to recognize and celebrate each student’s progress as they build understanding and master essential skills. Families can follow their child’s growth throughout the year through Empower, where they can view evidence of learning, celebrate achievements and understand the next steps on their child’s path.

A special focus this year will be helping every Marvin Star grow as a reader. Strong readers learn, imagine, question and explore. We want our students to experience the joy of slowing down, turning the page and getting lost in a story or a new idea. We invite families to join us by making time for reading at home, talking about books together and sharing the adventures that stories can bring.

Success on the trail begins with showing up every day. Regular attendance allows students to build relationships, practice skills, and take part in learning experiences that cannot be replaced when they are absent. Our goal is for every Marvin Star to attend school at least 90% of the time and arrive ready to learn each day.

Classroom Communities & New Staff

As our Marvin community continues to grow, we have worked throughout the summer to ensure that all students have equitable learning environments and access to strong instructional support. This year, Marvin will have five classrooms at every grade level, allowing for more balanced class sizes and increased opportunities for students to build strong relationships with their teachers and classmates.

  • Fourth Grade: Mr. Bellew, Ms. DeRousse, Dr. Freeman, Ms. Murray, Ms. Small

We are also excited to welcome several new members to the Marvin family this year. Please join us in welcoming Katie Benoit, Caylin Cheak, and Christina Lowery to our third grade team, Alden Small to fourth grade, and Mari Brooks to fifth grade. We are also excited to welcome Molly DuPlayee as our new art teacher, bringing creativity and new artistic experiences to all Marvin Stars, and Leslie Morales as our new English Learner (EL) teacher assistant, supporting our multilingual learners and helping students continue to grow and succeed.

Marvin Handbook & Important Back-to-School Events

Please review the Marvin Family and Student Handbook before the school year begins. It contains important information about school routines, expectations, safety procedures, attendance, arrival and dismissal, and other details to help us have a successful year together.

Important dates to remember:

  • Kindergarten Camp: Aug. 3–7 (registration required)
  • Popsicles with the Principal: Tuesday, Aug. 11, 5–6 p.m.
  • Kindergarten Transition Day: Thursday, Aug. 20, 9:15–11 a.m. (doors open at 9 a.m.)
  • Open House for Grades 1–5: Thursday, Aug. 20, 5–6:30 p.m.
  • First Day of School: Monday, Aug. 24 
  • Kindergarten Meet the Teacher: Wednesday, Sept. 2, 5–6 p.m.

We are proud of the growth and accomplishments of our Marvin Stars and look forward to another incredible year of learning, growth, and adventure together. We cannot wait to see where the trail leads our Marvin Stars this year.
