Accommodations and modifications listed on Form F in a student’s IEP (Individualized Education Program) remain fully in effect in a Competency-Based Education (CBE) setting. In CBE, students progress by demonstrating mastery of specific skills or competencies at their own pace. This personalized approach does not replace or remove the need for supports; instead, it works alongside them to support all learners, including those with disabilities.

Students with IEPs continue to receive the accommodations and modifications outlined in their plans. These supports—such as extended time, assistive technology, alternative formats, or adjusted assignments—ensure students have equal access to learning and the opportunity to show what they know in a way that works for them. Accommodations and modifications are a key part of this process. It ensures that instruction, materials, and assessments are tailored to meet each student’s needs. 

CBE is built on the idea of learning mastery—not seat time—and accommodations and modifications are essential to helping students reach that mastery. These supports help level the playing field, making sure every student has a fair chance to succeed.

Supporting your child through the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process is an important way to advocate for their success in school. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you prepare before, during, and after the IEP meeting.

Before the IEP Meeting

A case manager will contact you to schedule your child’s IEP meeting. Be prepared to contribute meaningfully by taking these steps:

• Review the Current IEP
  Look over your child's current IEP. Consider what has been effective and what hasn’t.

• Reflect on Strengths & Concerns
  Think about your child's academic, behavioral, social, and emotional development.

• Set Goals
  Identify what you want your child to achieve this year and in the future.

• Talk with Your Child
  Ask them how they feel about school. What’s going well? What are they finding difficult?

• Prepare Questions
  Make a list of any questions about services, supports, accommodations, or areas that are unclear to you.

During the IEP Meeting

During the meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss several key areas. Use this time to:

• Discuss your child’s areas of need

• Share their strengths and your concerns

• Review their current goals and progress

• Talk about assessment scores

• Go over any newly proposed goals

• Review service minutes and accommodations/modifications

• Ask questions or raise any additional topics you'd like to discuss

Feel free to bring notes and speak up—your input is essential.

After the IEP Meeting

• You’ll receive a copy of your child’s updated IEP within 30 days of the meeting. This may be emailed, mailed, or sent home with your child.
